shrink pot history?

Postby Darrell » Tue Aug 19, 2014 10:44 pm

Greetings all,

We were at a SCA (society for creative anachronism) event down in the United States a couple weeks ago (the Pennsic War, specifically) and I brought along a bunch of treen I had made. Spoons, spatulas, trenchers, bowls, and shrink pots. They thought the shrink pots were very cool, but a lot of people were interested in the historical aspects of them. When were they in use? What documentation or evidence do we have that they were made and used? What time periods were they used? I don't know. I thought to myself, self, ask the Bodgers, they should know.

So I'm asking... Anyone know about shrink pots in a historical context? Or where I can look this kind of thing up?

Obviously made and used throughout mainland Europe but not traditionally in UK. Here's a pic of a shrink-barrel from Czech Republic probably early 20thC (I think I may have posted this here before)[url=]
